Background

Named after the inventor James Hargreaves, who was born in 1720 in Oswaldtwistle, near Blackburn, and died in 1778 in Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. A poor, uneducated spinner and weaver, he is said to have conceived the idea for the Spinning Jenny, a machine allowing one person to spin several threads at once.
