One of Miss Hinett-Barker’s Year 11 students, Jonathon Bartram, decided that he would like to use artist Derek Walker for his GCSE Art exam but struggled to find out much information about his inspiration and history. Whilst researching him, Miss Hinett-Barker and Jonathan discovered that he is a professional artist from New York, and managed to find a business email address for him. Miss Hinett-Barker emailed him on behalf of Jonathan and told him how much his work had inspired her student… and he replied!!!!! – Here’s an insert from his reply:
“I'm so, so, so glad that my artwork could inspire someone on the other side of the world. That's awesome! That's really flattering honestly! I'd love to give a little background on myself.
My inspiration mainly comes from how I observe the world. I see beauty in everything. I think the design of supercars is stunning art and the people who create them are artists like myself being creative in their own ways. I'm always looking at locations as possible places to photograph cars. I like putting a beautiful, clean, bright supercar in a dark, almost industrial setting. The stark contrast I think appeals a lot of people.”
Derek has sent many further emails detailing how he creates his work, and has even gone to the trouble of making this video, especially for Ashfield Art students, explaining his influences and style in more depth! It really is quite incredible that a link has been established with an artist from across the world, all from finding one of his pictures on the internet
