Key Stage 4

Our KS4 curriculum begins in Year 9 and students will either follow a Foundation or Higher specification covering all aspects of Mathematics. All students are following the 9 – 1 AQA specification, sitting 3 papers at the end of Y11 (1 non calculator, 2 calculator each 1 hour 30 mins long). The Foundation specification allows students to obtain grades 5 – 1, with the Higher specification being able to obtain grades 9 – 4. The KS4 curriculum is designed to encourage students to work on their mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills. Some of our most able mathematicians may be selected to study a Level 2 Further Mathematics qualification which stretches the most able and helps bridge the gap to study at AS level.

Interventions for KS4 occur each day after school and students are encouraged to attend to develop their skills and understanding or gain assistance with revision topics.

At KS5 students have the opportunity to study AS and A level courses in Maths and Further Maths. The department also provides the opportunity to study for a Level 3 qualification (equivalent to an AS Level) in Core Maths, which is designed to support maths in other subjects such as Geography, Social Sciences and Biology. In addition, GCSE courses are available for all P16 students still needing to obtain a Grade 4 in Maths.

Students are encouraged to attend the drop in sessions for support with their studies and there are opportunities to be involved in enrichment conferences such as The Maths Inspiration Show
