Key Stage 3

English

Students study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts throughout Key Stage 3. Each term, they are assessed on the quality of their written responses and their ability to analyse and explore a writer’s use of language for a particular effect. Over the course of the year they will also be expected to work collaboratively and to produce presentations which may be delivered to the class.

In Key Stage 3, students will all take part in the Accelerated Reader scheme which promotes independent and critical reading at the appropriate level.

Section Title

Key Stage 4

Students study for two GCSEs in English Language and English Literature.

The course is 100% assessed through examinations at the end of Year 11.

English Language

Students will explore a range of fiction and non-fiction texts from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. They will examine and compare how language is used to create different effects for the reader. Within English Language, students will also be required to write creatively and express their point of view based on a particular writing scenario.

English Literature

Students will study a wide variety of literature from different time periods and authors. Students will read Shakespeare along with a range of modern and Literary Heritage poetry. In addition, students will develop the skills of comparison and responding to unseen poetry. Modern drama, such as ‘Blood Brothers’ or ‘An Inspector Calls’ will also be included in the teaching of this course.
